M-Sport's West Cumbrian base is set to get a luxurious makeover with the approval of a new bid to build 15 luxury lodges. This development, proposed by the motorsport company, aims to enhance the estate's hospitality offerings with short overnight stays for conferences, corporate events, and hospitality gatherings. The lodges, strategically located near Cockermouth, will be a sight to behold, with a unique design that includes a curving access road and a water feature. Two bespoke lodges will be positioned on the edge of this road, each featuring a hot tub on a cantilevered deck overlooking the water. The external cladding of these lodges will be made of timber, adding a natural and rustic touch. The proposal also includes new planting between the lodge pitches, ensuring a visually appealing and environmentally conscious development. Each lodge pitch will have two dedicated car parking bays, with EV charging points, catering to the modern traveler's needs. However, this exciting project is not without its challenges and controversies. Ward councillor Martin Harris, a Labour representative, has raised several concerns, including potential flood risks, noise pollution, increased traffic, and the impact on the natural environment and a nearby listed building. Additionally, five objections have been sent to the council, highlighting issues of overdevelopment, the type of accommodation, and the potential competition with existing holiday units in the area. Despite these challenges, the proposal is expected to move forward, with the planning committee of Cumberland Council set to discuss the application next Wednesday. The decision will determine the future of this ambitious project, which, if approved, could significantly enhance the area's hospitality and tourism offerings.
